Hoop Dreams: Magnificent documentary follows 2 Chicago central-city kids (Arthur Agee and William Bars), who have fantasies of basketball stardom, over 4 years’ time. This quaint and immersing film plays like drama, not documentary, with the exception of that it takes spontaneous twists and turns no author might create. The film presents a scorching commentary on our school system, the indomitable power of the family, and the uncertainty of life. (109 minutes, 1994)
Good News: Vigorous redo of the 1920s collegiate musical (by DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson), given a new coat of varnish by screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Lawford is Tait College’s arrogant football idol, and Allyson is the clever gal who catches him on the bounce back. Vintage melodies contain “The Best Objects in Life are Free,” “Just consider,” and “Varsity Drag”. New numbers contain “The French Lecture” and “Pass That Harmony Tube.” Cast includes June Allyson, Peter Lawford, Patricia Marshall, Joan McCracken, Ray McDonald, Mel Torme, Donald MacBride, Tom Dugan, and Clinton Sundberg. Rambling Rose: Evocative story set in 1930s Georgia, with Dem as an oversexed senseless gal who comes to work for a ladylike family headed by Duvall and Ladd. Vibrant, pleasantly detailed, and well performed, with numerous delightful astonishments during the voyage. Cast includes Laura Dem, Rohert Duvall, Diane Ladd, Lukas Haas, John Heard, Kevin Conway, Rohert J. Burke, Lisa Jakub, and Evan Lockwood. (112 minutes, 1991)
My Son John: Archetypal apple-pie parents (Hayes, Jagger) suspect their child (Stroller) of being a communist in this reactionary period piece. DramaticalIy overwrought, however this film is fascinating as a social history. Stroller (who’s brilliant) died before film was completed. Cast includes Helen Hayes, Robert Stroller, Dean Jagger, Van Heflin, Frank McHugh, and Richard Jaeckel. (122 minutes, 1952)
Ed Television: Amusing yam in reference to a despondent cable Television network that plans to televise a normal man’s life for every waking minute of the day and turn the meager sap into an overnight star. Cast includes Matthew McConaughey, Jenna Elfman, Woody Harrelson, Sally Kirkland, Martin Landau, Ellen DeGeneres, Rob Reiner, and Dennis Hopper. (133 minutes, 1999)
The Fog: A thick haze from the Pacific hangs over a Northwest seaside village, bringing with it murderous and vengeful ghosts. Lame redo of John Carpenter’s 1980 film modifies the structure but does not improve on the first edition. Cast includes Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair, DeRay Davis, Kenneth Welsh, Adrian Hough, Sara Botsford, and Rade Sherbedgia. (100 minutes, 2005)
La Petit Lili: A family’s country house is charged with sentiment while the hotheaded child, a yearning film maker actor, finds that his lady friend is captivated with his mom’s boyfriend, a triumphant head of mainstream films. Brilliant film empowered by Chekhov’s The Seagull, investigating the line between art and life, and how the 2 influence each other. Cast includes Nicole Garcia, Bernard Giraudeau, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Ludivine Sagnier, Robinson Steveniu, Julie Depardieu, Yves Jacques, and Michel Piccoli. (104 minutes, 2003)
The Front Page: First filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play is strainful, ludicrous, and flamboyantly prompted. This version stands up relatively well alongside the redo. Cast includes Adolphe Menjou, Pat O’Brien, Mary Brian, Edward Everett Horton, Walter Catlett, Mae Clarke, and George E. Rock. (103minutes, 1931)
Heartland: Basic, well informed tale of hearty Americans surviving the frontier life, circa 1910. Ferrell plays a youthful widow who acknowledges a job as housekeeper for dour rancher Tom in the wilds of Wyoming. Well performed, well filmed, and beautifully understated, based on the real journals of a pioneer lady. Cast includes Rip Torn, Conchata Ferrell, Barry Primus, Lilia Skala, Megan Folson, and Amy Wright. (100 minutes, 1979)
