The Different Styles Of Guitars
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by Wendy Racklave.
With such a wide variety of guitars, styles, brands, models, where does one begin the process of deciding which one is the best one to buy? The list of manufacturers alone can be daunting. Is hand made better than mechanical made. Some say hand made is the best.
Your style of music that you prefer is a big factor in choosing a guitar. If you want to play primarily rock, that pretty much eliminates an acoustic. If you want to play country, then you need to decide if you’ll be playing only in small areas with small crowds, or if you’ll need the amplification.
A common thought seems to be that acoustic guitars are best suited to country, jazz and that style of music. Electric guitars it is said are deemed to be best for rock, pop, the blues and so on. So if you want to go with this train of thought, the type of music you will be playing the most will also narrow down the field for you.
Choosing to play or learn bass guitar or steel guitar drastically reduces the number of guitars you have to choose from. If this is the style of guitar you want to play, then you need only be concerned with brand and model.
The acoustic-electric is a unique guitar. It is unique in the sense that it allows you to play both electric or acoustic on the same guitar. The switch is as simple as plugging in or unplugging the patch chord. An acoustic-electric, just as the name sounds, is an acoustic guitar with a built-in electric pick-up. There are also a wide range of manufacturers, models and price range in acoustic-electric guitars.
How much do you know about the artists you listen to? Do you know what style and brand of guitar they play? If you want to reproduce sounds similar to theirs, you may do best to have the same type of guitar as they do. It’s hard to get the same sound from two entirely different types of guitars.
Most music shops though are pretty good about showing you the different guitars, and letting you see how they feel, and hear what they sound like. For beginners, unless you’re certain you want an electric guitar, the acoustic-electric makes an excellent beginner guitar.

Kali Music Series – Goddess Kali, The Terrifying And Erotic Initiatress
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by Hans Havasi.
Goddess Kali, First Of The Mahavidya
Goddess Kali is the first of the 10 mahavidya, or wisdom goddesses in the tantric tradition. She is often portrayed as dancing on the dead body of her consort Shiva. She has black skin, 4 arms, wide open glaring eyes, a necklace consisting of severed heads and her tongue lolls wildly out of her big wide open mouth, laughing at the attachments of us mortal humans. Indeed a terrible spectacle to behold!
There is a lot of symbolism in these portrayals. There are allusions to our imminent death, there are symbols showing the polar aspect of the universe (yin and yang) and there are many erotic symbols as well. One of the main aspects of Goddess Kali is her aspect as the erotic initiatress and it is this aspect we will touch upon in this article.
Goddess Kali And Eros
Sexual energy is in its essence feminine and needs to be guided by our conscious masculine principle. If not so it becomes wild and frantic and will control us instead of us controlling it. Kali appears terrible to us because we cannot appreciate her huge power and our own sexual potential. Any woman who starts a worship of Kali will awaken her sexuality becoming able to fully enjoy life, her own energy and knows of the power of love.
The egoistic mind, which is stiff and afraid, fears such a female expansive energy. Through the ages men have feared these strong displays of femininity and her energy which has been repressed through centuries. It is in fact a fear of life energy itself which is in itself erotic, expansive and feminine. As we fear the fully awakened woman (in tantra referred to as Shakti) we fear life itself.
So therefore Kali appears terrible for most of us who do not understand her deeper meaning.
Goddess Kali And Kundalini
In Tantra it is said that our spiritual development starts with an awakening of our sexual energy called Kundalini. Kundalini lies coiled up at the base of our spines. When awakened it will travel up our spines transforming itself to more refined kinds of energy such as wisdom, love, intuition, clairvoyance etc.
This potential energy of Kundalini is symbolized by a snake which lies coiled up sleeping at the base of our spine and which symbolically starts dancing up our spine when awakened.
Goddess Kali and tantric ritual
Kali is invoked by meditating with her mantra (which is given by a Guru or tantric master) and can be worshipped by the continual gazing upon a yantra (see picture). Working with yantras is a powerful way to calm down the mind and to enter into a trance like state with the Goddess.
Kali can also be worshipped through erotic tantric rituals where the woman is first adored by the man as an embodiment of the Goddess before the foreplay and lovemaking start. After the ritual the man and woman separate and each make an individual tantra yogic practice (consisting of certain yoga positions and pranayamas ie breathing exercises) or meditations upon the Goddess.
The results of such rituals are deeply profound and will awaken deep mystical processes in the hearts of the lovers.

Best Guitar For Newbies|Finding The Best Guitar For Newbies|Squier Stratocaster – The Best Guitar For Beginners|What Is The Best Guitar For Beg
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by Mike Wong.
Finding the right guitar for beginners can be challenging but the primary factors to consider are price, durability and flexibility. By these standards, the Squier Stratocaster meets these criteria and is easily the best guitar for beginners.
Developed by Fender, the Squier Stratocaster is one of the best value beginner guitars and it can usually be found at any music store or online for $200. No beginner needs a more costly instrument and you can always buy a better guitar once you have improved your guitar playing skills.
One of the things I like most about the Squier is how durable it is. The Fender name means that as long as you take care of the instrument it should last for years with relatively few issues. For instance, I have heard that the strap buttons can come loose after a few months but this is easily fixed and the fact that this is the biggest problem the guitar faces with wear is a testament to its dependability.
Of course, price and dependability don’t mean much if the guitar isn’t versatile enough. New guitar players should have a capable guitar on which to try everything from the rock to blues to heavy metal. The Squier Strat gives you all of these capabilities and although it can’t match the thrills of more advanced guitars, it gives beginners a solid foundation from which to improve their skills.
If you go shopping for this guitar, don’t confuse the Squier Stratocaster with the Squier Affinity Strat or the Fender Stratocaster. The Affinity is a much less expensive model and it shows while the Fender Stratocaster is costs a bit more. The Squier Stratocaster sits right in the middle and is the best value for the a new guitarist.
In my opinion, the Squier Stratocaster is a great guitar for beginners. Its cost, durability and versatility make it the ideal choice for anyone just starting to learn the guitar. Go to your local music store and try to pick one up. Pair it up with a good guitar course and you will definitely love it.

Neal Schon – Oklahoma City’s Guitar God
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by Nathan Spencer.
If you are a music fanatic, especially one that has a craving for guitars, there is no way that you might not have heard of the name Neal Schon. This world famous Oklahoma guitarist is considered by many to be the God of guitar. Born on the 5th of February, 1954, this American guitarist is famous for his performances with the world famous band Journey. It is a fact that Neal is the sole member of the band Journey to have played in all of their recordings. Neal, who was born in an air force base situated close to Oklahoma City, picked up the guitar at the tender age of 5.
His father too was into music and was a jazz saxophonist but few people know this. A quick learner, Neal joined Santana at the tender age of 15. Prior to forming the group Journey in the year 1973, which he still leads, Neal was associated with Azteca. The playing style of this guitarist is considered as soulful by those who know him. Neal has also recorded albums with various other musicians, apart from the 14 studio albums he has made with the group founded by him.
Early on in his career, Neal had been requested by another guitar great, Eric Clapton, to join his group, Derek and the Dominos. However, this offer was turned down by Neal, since he was first called upon by Santana. Neal Schon joined Santana for recording the album Santana III. The first guitar used by Neal was an acoustic Stella and this fact might be interesting for those who are interested in learning electric guitars. 2 years later this guitar was replaced for a Gibson ES-335. Neal replaced his stolen Gibson with the 1956 make Les Paul Goldtop reissue and he used the same for quite a number of years.
Gibson guitars are currently endorsed by this famous guitarist. There are some limited editions signature models also available which are known as the “Neal Schon Signature Model Custom Les Paul”. According to Gibson’s official website, only thirty five of such custom guitars were built. Neal has also used some other guitars during his long career and one of them is the Goldin guitar which he had used for “Beyond the Thunder”, a solo album, which was released towards the end of the 1980’s. Gibson, which manufactures some of the best solo guitars, is endorsed by Schon.

The Development of the Trumpet
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by Jim Samposzi.
The trumpet, an instrument of the woodwind or brass collection, is built primarily of brass or bronze and includes: a mouthpiece, horn end, a spit valve, and keys. This instrument is said to be fully chromatic because trumpets contain three finger controls for tone manipulation. Some trumpets also be built with a a trigger line to fix any awkward sounds generated by the use of the few control keys. This line can be pulled while the musician is playing and the change is so smooth that it will be unheard when it is used. The spit valve is included to clear any spit that has built up in the tube just beyond the mouthpiece. The history of trumpets is fascinating and these instruments go way back in time; as far back as 2000 B.C.
The melody of this instrument are created by the coupling, inclusion, or emulation of the three finger controls. The sound produced is made from the vibration of your lips on the mouthpiece and then further tweaked by the finger controls before the sound reaches the opening, or end, of the trumpet. The collision of combinations of tones became more and more important to the development of certain types of music. Because the buttons can be changed to produce any sound, all types of music can include a trumpet from time to time.
The trumpet by nature, is pitched to go with the soprano section of ensembles. This means, the chromatic range of sounds made go from F sharp and back to C – prior to the clef that allows for treble ranges. Though, the broad range of options for trumpets are not confined to this range; some belt out notes in the G and high C range.
Trumpets, like a lot of things for sale, come in many styles and brands. Some are preferred over others. Also, because of this, they differ widely by cost. In addition, lots of them have other abilities for pitching that do not come standard. A few of the more common types of trumpets are:
Piccolo, Brass, Herald, Natural, Slide and Bronze
The trumpet was first created in 2000 B.C. where played in the bands in religious service. The first styles included things they found to make noise, like: a piece of bamboo, or an animal horn, or bone. The Christian bible has many references to trumpets and some were found in the tomb of the historic Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. From the 14th century, makers developed the folded trumpet that is similar to trumpets of modern days where the metal tubing is folded and arched from beginning to end. The beginning of these instruments was merely straight and elongated with a bell on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. Then, in the days of opera, the trumpet was introduced in 1607 during a well-known Opera named Orfeo. In time, trumpets were sounded to send military communications but were later developed to play music. In the 19th century, these instruments became an important instrument for symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz bands, military productions, marching bands, and sometimes rock collaboration.
