A bass guitar is heavy and cumbersome to carry around, because of all the supporting gadgets that come with it, not to mention the long cables that accompany all of the gadgets. Bass guitars are expensive to purchase, and also tough to learn. But these are indispensable in any pop or rock band. A bass guitar can indeed be the most prized possession of a devoted bassist.
Bass players want to be able to play the type of leads, licks and arpeggio runs that the pro players are doing, yes since most bass players have a really poor knowledge of their fretboard patterns and their application of them is so limited that it becomes a set back to their ability to play more and do more with their instrument.
Identify the parts of the bass guitar. There are typically four strings, and the components are very similar to a guitar. The thickest string is the E (the topmost), followed by A, D, and G, and are also referred to as 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively. On the neck of the guitar forming a grid-like pattern with the strings are metal strips called frets that make the notes produced higher as it goes farther from you.
Feel the beat, playing the bass guitar differs primarily from playing a regular guitar because it entails an emphasis on the beat of the music. One can compare the bass guitar into a drum or percussion set that is made into a guitar. Beats are very important in playing bass guitar because this type of guitar gives depth and timing to any song.
Make sure you learn all the most common scales. The scales you should learn are the major scale, minor scale, melodic minor, harmonic minor, pentatonic, blues, and minor blues. These are all really common and should prepare you for just about any situation.
Make yourself a jam track and practice soloing. Learn little trick that you know you can rely on to make a cool lick on the spot. Remember, practice makes perfect! So go show those guitar players that they need to up there game because now they have the bass guitar right behind them ready to take the spotlight
Once that you feel comfortable with the scales, it’ll be time to move to other techniques to increase your skills and vocabulary. But scales should never be overlooked, they build your playing and playing them on your bass also serves you as an ear training exercise.
