The Difference Between Legal And Illegal MP3 Downloads

Posted on 10. Aug, 2009 by Susan Reynolds in Music

Almost everyone has downloaded music online at some point. There are many avenues in which someone can go online and download the music. Some sites have Peer 2 Peer programs while others use what are known as torrents. The problem is that it?s easier to download music that?s illegal than it is to download music that?s not. Thus it?s important to know which sites are legitimate and which sites are not.

These MP3 sharing sites are becoming harder and harder for the record companies to track. It may be tempting to go with a site that isn?t legitimate. However in the long run you will risk getting caught like several other have as well as you will have stolen what you have. While it can be difficult to tell if a site is legitimate or not there are several signs that give away a sites non-legitimacy.

The first and biggest sign that a site isn?t legitimate is a site that claims that you can download anything for free. There are a few sites that have small amounts of music that is not copyrighted. However the majority of sites that claim you can download free music are sites that are allowing users to freely share the information. Whether it?s a P2P site or a torrent site it?s still users sharing music illegally. The users don?t have permission from the record companies to distribute the music freely. This method is hard for companies to track however they?re working on ways to track it. Some of these sites even will claim that they are legitimate even if they are not.

Secondly if you see a site that claims you can download unlimited music for one low price you will want to proceed cautiously. Most of these sites are illegal sites that charge you to download from them. This means that the full amount of your money goes to them while none of it goes to the copyright company. Not only are you downloading music illegally but you?re paying to do so. There are one or two sites that will allow you to do this that are legal however as soon as you stop your subscription your files will no longer work and thus you really don?t own the music you are just paying to listen to your favorite music anytime.

The easiest way to find a legal MP3 downloading site is to find a major online distributor. Well known downloading sites like Napster and iTunes can be counted on to provide clean downloads without worry. The only downside is that you will have to pay for each song or for a subscription to purchase the songs. Most importantly, remember to keep your music and videos purchased to you. Even after you buy them the copyright companies still own the information and don?t want you to give it away to people who haven?t purchased it. You can however, make copies for yourself.
